I Am Grateful

30 :: I Am Grateful
This 30-day exercise in sharing what I am grateful for each day has helped me to look at my days in a different light. Some days, it was obvious what I felt grateful for; other days, I had to dig a little deeper to see the silver lining. It has become a habit, none the less, to be mindful during the moments of my day for the things I am thankful for, both big and small. I already knew my world was full of blessings - but writing about a different one each day has filled me with appreciation for the people, places and things around me. So I close by saying, quite simply... I Am Grateful.

I Am Grateful For...These Final Days of Autumn

29 :: These Final Days of Autumn
As the days grow shorter and shorter, I am grateful for these final days of Autumn. Today, we soaked in a beautiful Florida Fall day at a local, family-owned farm and produce market. I stocked up on spaghetti squash (which we ate for dinner with homemade tomato sauce) and butternut squash (which I plan to use in Snip and Snail's Roasted Sage Butternut Squash recipe). Also among my goodies were some beautiful leeks and farm-fresh eggs that I will combine into a yummy quiche in the morning.
Selby enjoyed picking out peanuts that we will roast for snacks this week.
Our fruit selection included a variety of pears and a surprising find - Florida-grown strawberries! I've been patiently waiting for these gems to show up at the market, so an early crop delighted me. A sweet sign of the changing seasons.
Only a few remnants of the passing season remained around the farm, including a pumpkin "vase" in the country store and a jack-o-lantern photo opp.
One of the pumpkin patches we saw at our last visit was replaced with this lovely pond...
...the other had turned into a tent filled with Christmas trees! A few lonely piles of Indian corn were interspersed amongst the fragrant firs, visually reflecting the shift I felt inside. Only three short weeks away from Winter, I'm holding these final orange-tinted, pumpkin-flavored days of Autumn close... still counting their many blessings.

I Am Grateful For...Magazines

28 :: Magazines
I have a thing for magazines. I just love them! I live for the days when a new magazine comes in the mail. I wait until the girls are asleep, then snuggle into my favorite reading space with a blanket and a cup of hot tea, and lose myself in the slick, colorful pages. Sometimes I read every page, in order; other times I skip around, just looking at the photos or flip through to find the cover story. Decorating magazines are my favorites, especially Domino and Cottage Living. And I love "idea shopping" from catalogs like Ballard Designs and Pottery Barn. I also enjoy lifestyle, crafting, food, women's health and parenting magazines. And the diverse celeb mags of Martha Stewart, Oprah and Rachel Ray. Oh, and Real Simple is a favorite. (I know, I said I have an issue.)
I take comfort in knowing it's not just me... My mother is as crazy about magazines as I am. I have been known to hide new issues before she comes over so they don't mysteriously disappear. She once said she knew how much I loved her when I lent her an unopened, favorite magazine for a long plane trip. We share our publications primarily so we can read more for less!
I think the love of magazines might be genetic, as Selby has taken to them already. She gets National Geographic Kids and Highlights in the mail, and of course lots of great children's catalogs (which I love too!) like Magic Cabin. She told me in the car today that she wanted a new play kitchen for Christmas. "You already have a kitchen," I responded. "Yes, Mom, but not like the one in the catalog!" Ah yes... the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

I Am Grateful For...This Day of Food & Family

27 :: This Day of Food & Family
I am so very blessed to have all of my immediate family right here in the same town. My mother & father, my father-in-law and my sister & nephew. Today, we all gathered for Thanksgiving dinner at my parent's house. The feast was fabulous and included:
Fresh Oven-Roasted Turkey
Mom's Homemade Stuffing
Turkey Gravy from scratch
My Roasted Veggies
Grandpa's Cucumber Salad
Collard Greens
Fresh Green Beans
Yeast Rolls
Cranberry Sauce
Sweet Tea
Apple-Cranberry Crumble
Pumpkin Ice Cream Pie
We ate to our bellies' content! Then there was football, good conversation and naps. Plus, Sage walked about 6 steps - the most to-date - with everyone watching. And Selby gave us a concert, accompanied by Nana & Aunt Dianne on the piano!I am grateful for the beautiful, bountiful meal we enjoyed together; for the lovely way my 4-year-old led us in sharing what we are thankful for before we dined; for each and everyone one of my dear family and all that they do to support one another every single day. I know how lucky I am for all this...I feel blessed beyond words.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I Am Grateful For...A Little More Space

26 :: A Little More Space
One month ago, I wrote about my intentions for the new moon as it entered Scorpio. Tomorrow night, on Thanksgiving, the moon beings a new cycle in Sagittarius. Before I set forth my new intentions, I have been reflecting on those of this past month - primarily my goal to create more space. I have been practicing having a more spacious mind, releasing unrealistic expectations and responding to situations and challenges with more openness. I have a long way to go, but have taken some steps in the right direction. I've exercised more patience in trying situations and let more roll off my back than I typically do, being an ever-critical Virgo through and through. Likewise, I have lessened some of the pressure I place upon myself to meet my own perfectionist standards. As a result, my life has been a little messier, a little less organized - and a little more easy-going over the past month. Creating space has been an exercise in releasing control in many aspects of my life. I am grateful for the progress I have made and for a little more space in my world.

As we enter into the Sagittarius New Moon tomorrow, I will continue this intention with a focus on releasing control and living in the moment. As we move into the holiday season, my intentions also include being mindful of living simply and meaningfully, without over committing and misusing my time and energies. Care to join me with some intentions for tomorrow's new moon? I'd love to hear them!

I Am Grateful For...A Little Turkey Humor

25 :: A Little Turkey Humor
Selby's school asked all the kids how to make a Thanksgiving turkey. Here was Selby's response:

"Go to the grocery store - Publix. You have to come with me to find them. They have to keep them very cold so they stay dead. Look at the price and pick one that you have money for in your purse. Take it home. Cook it in the oven. Put on lemon - yum!! Sprinkle on a little salt - but only a little because salt has lots of fat in it. I don't even like turkey though. I like turkey fingers - you make them the same way to make chicken nuggets. Cook it for 6 minutes and eat it!"

The teachers provided parents a printout of all the funny ways 4 and 5 year olds think the turkey gets to the table. The girls mainly bought their turkeys at the store - the boys primarily hunted them down on farms! This was a great activity and provided a real pick-me-up amidst a crazy week. I am so grateful for the laughs!

(Ask your little one how to make a Thanksgiving turkey and see what they say. I'd love to know what their responses!)

I Am Grateful For...Daddy Bird

24 :: Daddy Bird
I am forever grateful for my dear husband, best friend and parenting partner, Daddy Bird Jeff. I am grateful for his constant efforts to ensure I am happy and well, his calming wisdom, his clear-headed judgement, his equanimity in all things, the goofy way he plays with the girls, the same boyish smile he's had since we met in high school, his loyalty, his love, his intensity & passion for life... I truly appreciate all that he is and all that he does for his family.

I Am Grateful For...Yard Sale Treasure

23 :: Yard Sale Treasure
I love a great yard sale! This morning, my mother, sister and I went to a fabulous sale at the cottage of a blogging-acquaintance of my mother's (Chez Fifi). I found some great treasures... The oversized letters spell "DREAM" and have given me the inspiration I needed to start my simple master bedroom renovation (one of the main facets of this will be moving Sage's futon mattress to her own room). Maybe a future post on this project...
Other treasures include this smoky-green, old glass cloche that found a new home in my dining-room hutch. And two excellent additions to my home office/studio - a beadboard magnetic chalkboard and this whimsical bird's egg wreath.
I found a little treat for Selby too, The Everyday Fairy Book and a "real" fairy wand. Sweet.

I am grateful for my yard sale treasure! (Check out my mother's post at Hello Sunshine to see all her great finds!)

I Am Grateful For...My Backyard Bounty

22 :: My Backyard Bounty
Ever since I can remember, I have had fruit trees in my yard. My childhood home was surrounded by six orange trees and six grapefruit trees. With the whole neighborhood saturated in citrus trees, the intoxicating fragrance of orange blossoms was as thick as smoke in the spring. I used to "ice" mud pies with those little white blossoms. In late fall and into the winter, the fruit on our trees was so abundant we'd often hire help to haul some of it away. And I clearly remember being sent out into the yard with my sister, plastic baggies fastened to our hands (who needs latex gloves?), to pick up fruit that had dropped and lay rotting on the ground. One year, my father even brewed his own grapefruit wine in our laundry room. Four Christmases ago, we toasted the very last bottle of that concoction (aged over 20 years), fondly remembering our family home in the grove!

My current house has just one orange tree, which is much easier to handle and produces more than enough for a family of four. Over the last week, Selby and I have begun to collect just-ripe oranges from our backyard bounty. I quarter them up and the girls devour them, sticky sweet juice dripping down their arms and covering their delicate faces. Today, we squeezed some for morning juice - always best drank out of small mason jars. And there's nothing like fresh-squeezed OJ, over ice, with a splash of Absolut.

We also have a lemon tree in our backyard that produces big, beautiful lemons, which will soon ripen to a perfect shade of sunshine. And several banana trees hang out down by the water, bearing bunches of small, flavorful bananas year-round. Once good and ripe, I'm going to use some of the ones pictured below to make banana bread for the holidays.

As I recall my sweet, orange-tinted childhood memories, I am ever more grateful for my current backyard bounty. I appreciate not only the tasty fruit it bears, but also the memories - already in the making - it will produce for my girls. Come spring, Selby will inherit the wisdom & technique of an orange blossom-frosted mud pie, baked in the sunshine of a Florida backyard!

I Am Grateful For...My Mother's Cooking

21 :: My Mother's Cooking
It's been a rough day around here, with three out of four under the weather and at home. As the odd man out, I was mommy and caretaker all day. That's why I am so very grateful to my own mother, for caring for me tonight with a delicious, homemade meal delivered right to my table. Turkey meatloaf, macaroni & cheese, fresh green beans and her famous homemade tomato-vegetable soup. Ah...there's nothing like your mom's cooking to make everything better. And now I have feast leftovers that will last through the whole weekend. Thank you mother, and Happy Friday to all.

I AM Grateful For...Selby

20 :: Selby
I am grateful for my sweet Selby...her dramatic flair, her diva-style, her silly sense of humor, her sweet singing, her petite frame, her expressive eyes, her mischievous nature, her inner calm and outer wildness. Tonight as I put her to bed she sighed as she hugged me and said, "I am falling in love with you Mommy." My heart just melted. I am grateful this beautiful child chose me!

I Am Grateful For...My Novel Mamas

19 :: My Novel Mamas
I am grateful for the beautiful, talented, one-of-a-kind group of mamas who have inspired my novel. I am grateful for our magical friendship and all the support, laughter and love it generates. And so, as promised, a sneak peak at the real-life cast of characters in my book:
Laura rides a wave of ecstasy through the birth of her second child and the launch of a new career. A full-throttle approach to mothering and work force her to find a point of balance before it all falls apart. This babywearing business owner offers inspiration and hope that mothers can, in fact, do it all.For Tonya, the big surprises keep rolling in, beginning with an unexpected conception of baby #2 and continuing through a tumultuous year to follow. She faces some of the toughest issues of motherhood and life with strength and humor, learning when to hold tight and when to release.Starting with the birth of her second child, Liz discovers mothering and family life are the perfect opportunity to deepen her mindful living practice. Her spiritual aspirations are put to the test as she manages raising a family and reviving her pre-kids writing career. Her journey inspires one to be open and accept the moment. Maggie is deep in the throws of co-parenting two children with the woman she loves when she realizes her babes are no longer babies. This artist learns to celebrate unconditional acceptance and love as she embarks on the ups & downs of both a new stage of mothering and a new phase in her relationship. While growing her family, Colleen is also growing her sense of self, working on improving all aspects of her life. She is compelled to call upon this new found strength of body, mind & spirit when her second pregnancy takes an unexpected turn. Her journey exemplifies how a mother must care for herself in order to care for her family. Midwife to all the mamas, Heidi shocks the sisterhood by moving out of the country to an enchanted new life just as she discovers she is pregnant with her second child. Her unique story of leaving her home, family & friends, is one of creating and finding identity through the many phases of life.

Thank you mamas, for everything!

I Am Grateful For...Creative Outbursts

18 :: Creative Outbursts

I have been on an on-and-off, two-day creative rampage. When I have these outbursts, my mind swells with ideas, I can hardly stop to eat and I have trouble sleeping. Here is a sampling of what has come from my madness:

  • the inception of a new blog, coauthored by my mother, Marcy... more on this to come soon!
  • the creation of a stitch and bitch where my crafty (and patient) friend Tonya is going to teach me and a few others how to knit
  • the beginnings of a new essay/article on sisterhood that I hope to sell somewhere for $
  • lots of baby steps forward on my book

A bunch more ideas for crafting, decorating, writing and more are still spinning in my head. Does anyone have an idea how to get off this crazy train? Regardless of the sleep deprivation, I am grateful for creative outbursts.

I Am Grateful For...Green Living (and Giveaways!)

17 :: Green Living (and Giveaways!)
Yesterday I spent most of my day at the 4th annual Efest, Florida's largest green living music & arts festival. Eco-friendly exhibits ranged from funky eco art and healthy healing arts to green landscape solutions and all-natural pet products. I spent a lot of time in the children's eco village and was delighted to find some goodies worth sharing!These dainty purses from Bossy Baby are made from vintage hankies & ribbons! They are part of the Bossy Baby Vintage Collection, which blends vintage pillowcases with vintage lace and ribbons for irresistible, recyclable children's wear. Tina Bossy has kindly donated one of these sweet 100% cotton purses for the very first Natural Nester Giveaway! If you'd like a chance to win it for a special sweetie in your life, leave a comment on this post.
More great natural and environmentally-friendly products for kids caught my eye at the Baby Moonflower booth. Mom proprietor Holly Riley has created a one-stop-shop for natural parenting enthusiasts. Baby carriers, cloth diapers, toys, clothes & more... I bought Sage a pair of Baby Legs and love them already. Want some too? Holly has donated a pair for our Natural Nester Giveaway today! Just leave a comment on this post for a chance to win.
This is a piece of eco art by event showcase artist Anita Wexler who recycles metals and found objects into colorful sculptures. Part of her totem series, this piece looks like a nest, so of course it caught my eye! I fell in love with these huggable lovies at the Artisan's World Marketplace exhibit. A non-profit retail outlet for fairly-traded goods from around the globe, these toys are hand-knitted by women in Kenya. Check out their website for hand-crafted gifts with global-reaching benefits.
Of course these are just a few of the great finds I discovered (all based in my own backyard) at this huge celebration of green & healthy living. Both educational & inspirational, Efest reminded me how thankful I am for our beautiful planet and all the people working to preserve and enhance it. I am grateful for green living!

(oh yes, and for giveaways too...remember, leave a comment for your chance to win a vintage hankie purse from Bossy Baby or a pair of Baby Legs from Baby Moonflower - two great ways to enjoy green living! I'll close the comments and announce the winner on Wednesday at 9 pm EST.)

I Am Grateful For...A Novel Morning

15 :: A Novel Morning

Daddy Bird has taken the girls to a birthday party this morning, so I have 2-3 blissful hours to myself! So many things I want to do - scrapbook, read, blog... So many things I ought to do - laundry, dishes, shower... But one thing stands out more than anything else - I want to write. So I am very grateful for this morning to work on my novel.

I have vaguely mentioned here that I am writing a book about my sisterhood of home-birth mamas. On this novel morning, I offer you the first public look at this project with a brief synopsis of my book.

Working Title: "All This I Am" The Early Years of the ____ Sisterhood (I am still struggling with a name for our beloved group of mamas - suggestions and ideas are welcome!)

Synopsis: "All This I Am" tells the story of six young mothers whose lives intersected over 5 years ago at a birthing home in their beach-side Florida town. Pregnant together again, Liz, Laura and Tonya are preparing for the home births of their second children. Heidi is packing for a move across the globe. Colleen is searching for her true self. And Maggie is co-parenting two kids with a woman partner. Joined together by a unique bond, each of these women face life-changing challenges and triumphs, while together building a like-minded community of families. This enchanting novel explores self-discovery within motherhood and reveals the divine power of a sisterhood like none other.

An introduction to the real-life cast of characters who inspired this project is coming soon!

I Am Grateful For...Coffee

14 :: Coffee
Last night, we played musical beds at our house. I started out in my bed, Sage on the futon mattress on the floor next to me, Selby in her bed, and Daddy on the couch (this is his choice, to sleep where he can keep his blankets and snore freely). Midway through the night - which was lit by a full moon - Daddy took my place next to Sage, who was now in my bed, while I joined Selby in hers after a long wakeful spell. A few hours later, Daddy fell asleep on the couch while comforting Sage, who wanted mommy. By daybreak, we were all back where we started, except for Sage, who was happily reunited with me, in my bed. So it's no wonder that, today especially, I am grateful for coffee.Jeff & I love flavored coffee, although we don't always agree on the flavor. So we have a system. We keep several flavors on hand and each day we have something different. Right now, choices include: Swiss Mocha Almond, Hazelnut, French Vanilla and Caramel Mocha. We try different combos of these flavors; Hazelnut-Vanilla is a fave! But if I want some exotic or seasonal brew, I am on my own. So this morning, after chugging a small cuppa joe at home and dropping off my bed-jumping girls, I stopped by a local coffee house for a cup of Pumpkin Spice coffee with a splash of milk. And the night's events drifted away in the steam...
Happy Friday.

I Am Grateful For...Nature Walks

13 :: Nature Walks
One of our favorite family activities is to turn our afternoon walk into a treasure hunt. As we stroll around our suburban neighborhood, Selby and I scout for bits of nature that we can add to our basket of treasure. Today was a particularly gratifying hunt: amidst our collection were flowers, various seed pods, acorns, a few fall leaves (most of the leaves here in Florida stay green), a feather and windborne seeds. After we completed the loop, we sat down on the driveway with our basket to examine our loot. Selby shook the seed pods and cracked some open to get a look at the insides. Sage waved leaves in the air and taste tested the flowers.
These "nature walks" are some of my most treasured times with my children. My eyes, completely focused on a great find, don't see the houses, the mailboxes or the paved road... they see leaves blowing in the wind, scatterings of acorns, scampering squirrels and curled-up bugs. My eyes see, for a short while, more like a child. For this, I am so grateful.

I Am Grateful For...Visitors to My Nest

12 :: Visitors to My Nest
Many of you have written me or told me how much you enjoy and appreciate my blog. Today, I am thankful to you who visit A Natural Nester. There are people from all over the world stopping by to see what's going on here in my little nest. I'd love to hear from you - please take a moment to say hello again or introduce yourself. And tell me what you are grateful for... I am grateful for the support, interest and comments of my readers. Thank you!

I Am Grateful For...Little Gaps

11 :: Little Gaps
Today was one of those days where nothing had to get done and I didn't have to be anywhere. I could, relatively speaking, take the day off. I am grateful for a slow, quiet day - they few and far between - where I could savor my morning coffee, gaze out at the water, snuggle Sage, and make art with Selby. Little gaps like this allow me to clear my mind and steady myself for more busy days ahead. Sigh.

10 :: 1st Trip Around the Sun
Today is Sage's first birthday and I am thankful for every day of her first trip around the sun. I am grateful for her sweet baby smell, her chubby cheeks (and legs, tummy, bottom...), her enthusiastic laugh, the funny way she butt-scoots around, her developing sense of humor, her need to be close, and so much more. My heart is full of gratitude that this beautiful soul chose to come into this world through me.
